Rights of residents

Study note

Living in the UK gives people a set of important rights and freedoms that the law protects. These include freedom of belief and religion, freedom of speech, freedom from unfair discrimination, the right to a fair trial, and the right to take part in electing a government. Being able to list these rights is a common test point.

Each of these freedoms has a clear meaning. Freedom of speech lets you express your views openly. Freedom of belief and religion means you may follow any faith, or none, without being punished for it. A fair trial means that if you are accused of a crime your case is heard properly, and freedom from unfair discrimination means you cannot be treated worse because of who you are. The right to elect a government is your share in the country's democracy.

Watch out for false "rights" in the questions. There is no right to avoid paying taxes, to ignore court orders or to break the law. Those are wrong answers designed to test whether you really understand what a genuine right in the UK is.

Memory tip: Rights = freedoms: belief, speech, fair trial, no discrimination, a vote.
