Who must take the test and language of the test
Study note
Many different groups of people have to pass the Life in the UK Test as part of settling here. This includes people on work visas, such as those granted under Tier 1 and Tier 2 of the points-based immigration system. People in these categories normally must pass the test before they can become permanent residents.
The test is usually taken in English, because a knowledge of English is part of what is being assessed. However, there are special arrangements for the other languages of the UK. By arrangement, the test can be taken in Welsh or in Scottish Gaelic, reflecting the fact that these are languages of Wales and Scotland.
Be careful with the wrong options here. The test is not offered in languages such as French, German, Irish, Cornish, Polish or Urdu, and Welsh speakers are not exempt from sitting it. The point to remember is English by default, with Welsh or Scottish Gaelic available by special arrangement.
Memory tip: Test is in English, or by arrangement Welsh or Scottish Gaelic.
