Becoming a permanent resident
Study note
Becoming a permanent resident, often called settlement, or becoming a British citizen, involves meeting several conditions. First, you must agree to respect the laws, values and traditions of the UK. Settling here is treated as a commitment to the country and the shared values that underpin its way of life.
There are also two practical requirements that most applicants must meet. You usually need to show a good enough knowledge of the English language, because being able to use English helps you take a full part in work and everyday life. You also normally have to pass the Life in the UK Test, which checks your understanding of British traditions, history and everyday life.
Settlement is not granted simply because you were born somewhere, own property or belong to a particular group. Being born in the UK, owning a house in London or running a business are not the requirements. The key things to remember are respecting UK values, meeting the English requirement and passing the Life in the UK Test.
Memory tip: To settle: respect UK values + pass the English requirement + pass the Life in the UK Test.
