Failed the Life in the UK Test? How retakes work

4 min read · Last reviewed 4 June 2026

If you do not pass the Life in the UK Test, do not worry, you can retake it. You normally have to wait at least 7 days before you can book again, there is no limit on the number of attempts, and you pay the booking fee each time.

There is no maximum number of attempts. Many people pass on a second try once they fix a few weak topics.

Why people fail (and how to fix it)

You are told whether you passed or failed, but not exactly which questions you got wrong. The most common reasons for failing are skipping the parts of the handbook that feel boring, relying only on full mock tests without learning topic by topic first, and running out of time.

  • Go back to basics: learn each topic, then test yourself on it, rather than only sitting full papers.
  • Drill the questions you keep getting wrong until they are automatic.
  • Sit timed exams so the 45-minute limit feels comfortable and you are not rushing at the end.
  • Aim for well above the 18 out of 24 pass mark in practice, so nerves on the day do not tip you under.

A simple retake plan

  1. Use the 7-day wait to revise the weak chapters, not to take a break.
  2. Re-read each chapter once, then practise that chapter until you score near full marks.
  3. Sit two or three full timed exams in the last few days before you rebook.
  4. Only book again once you are passing your mocks comfortably.
