Life in the UK Test pass mark: how many you need to pass

4 min read · Last reviewed 4 June 2026

The Life in the UK Test has 24 multiple-choice questions and you are given 45 minutes to answer them. To pass you must answer at least 18 out of 24 correctly, which works out at 75 percent.

Pass mark in one line: 18 out of 24 correct (75%), in 45 minutes.

How the score works

Every question is worth one mark and there is no negative marking, so you are never penalised for a wrong answer. That means you should answer every question, even if you have to guess, because a blank answer can never score but a guess sometimes will.

You can afford to get up to 6 questions wrong and still pass. Get 7 or more wrong and you will not pass on that attempt.

Do you find out your score?

You are told whether you have passed or not, but you are not given a detailed breakdown of which questions you got wrong. Because of that, it is worth aiming comfortably above the pass mark in your revision rather than just scraping 18.

How to hit the pass mark with confidence

  • Learn topic by topic first, then test yourself, rather than only sitting full mocks.
  • Sit timed practice exams so the 45-minute limit feels normal on the day.
  • Re-test the questions you got wrong until they are automatic. Most failed attempts come from a handful of repeatedly-missed facts.
  • Aim for 22 out of 24 in practice, so a couple of nerves-related slips on the day still leave you above the line.

You can revise every topic and sit unlimited timed exams for free on this site. Start with the free practice questions and answers, then move on to a timed mock test once the topics feel solid.

The pass mark and format are set by the government. Always confirm the current rules on GOV.UK before you book.
