NATO and the UK

Study note

NATO is a defence alliance made up of countries in Europe and North America. Its main purpose is security: the member countries agree to help and defend one another if any of them comes under attack. It is not about collecting taxes, running the United Nations or setting UK school policy.

By working together, NATO members aim to deter aggression and keep the peace among themselves. The UK is a member of NATO and takes part in the alliance. Even though the UK has left the European Union, it remains in NATO, the UN and the Commonwealth. For the test, remember that NATO is a defence alliance whose members agree to help each other if attacked, and that the UK is one of its members.

Memory tip: NATO is a defence alliance; members help each other if attacked. The UK is a member.
