International organisations

Study note

The UK works with other countries through several international organisations. It is a member of the United Nations, the UN, which was set up after the Second World War to help prevent conflict and keep the peace. It also belongs to the Commonwealth, an association of countries, many of which were once part of the British Empire.

The UK is a member of NATO as well, a defence alliance of countries in Europe and North America whose members agree to help one another if they are attacked. One organisation the UK no longer belongs to is the European Union, which it left in 2020. So if a question asks which bodies the UK is part of, the United Nations, the Commonwealth and NATO are correct, while the European Union is not.

Memory tip: UK is in the UN, the Commonwealth and NATO (it left the EU in 2020).
