Fundamental freedoms

Study note

People in the UK enjoy a number of fundamental freedoms that are protected by law. These include freedom of speech, so people can express their opinions, and freedom of religion and belief, so everyone can choose and practise a faith or none. There is also freedom from unfair discrimination and the right to a fair trial, which means anyone accused of a crime is treated justly by the courts.

These freedoms are valued, but they come with responsibilities. People are expected to respect the law and the rights and opinions of others. Freedom does not mean a right to ignore the law or to avoid paying taxes. For the test, recognise the genuine protected freedoms, such as freedom of speech and freedom of religion and belief, and rule out anything that suggests a freedom to break the law.

Memory tip: Freedoms: speech, religion, fair trial, no unfair discrimination.
