Devolved governments

Study note

Since the late 1990s, some powers have been devolved, which means given, from the UK government to national bodies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each nation has its own elected body that can make decisions on local matters such as education and health.

It helps to learn where each body sits. The Scottish Parliament is based in Edinburgh. The Welsh Parliament, which is called the Senedd, sits in Cardiff. The Northern Ireland Assembly sits in Belfast. England does not have its own separate devolved parliament, so a city like Manchester is not the home of a devolved body. Remembering the simple pairings, Scotland with Edinburgh, the Senedd with Cardiff, and the Northern Ireland Assembly with Belfast, will answer most questions on this topic.

Memory tip: Scotland-Edinburgh, Wales-Senedd in Cardiff, NI Assembly-Belfast.
