The national anthem
Study note
The national anthem of the UK is 'God Save the King'. It is the country's official song and is played at important national events and at occasions attended by the King or other members of the Royal Family, such as state ceremonies and some sporting events. Other patriotic songs, like 'Rule, Britannia!' or 'Land of Hope and Glory', are not the national anthem.
The wording of the anthem follows the gender of the monarch. When the monarch is a king, as now, it is 'God Save the King', and when the monarch is a queen, it becomes 'God Save the Queen'. For the test, the answer to remember is that the UK national anthem is 'God Save the King'.
Memory tip: The national anthem is 'God Save the King'.
