An equal society

Study note

Modern UK society is built on the principle that everyone should be treated equally, whatever their sex or background. Men and women have the same legal rights, including the right to work, to own property, and to marry or divorce. It is against the law to discriminate against someone because of their gender or marital status.

This equality is reflected in the workplace, where women now make up about half of the workforce. It is therefore not true to say that only men may work or own property, or that women are not allowed to be part of the workforce. The key facts to remember are that men and women have equal rights and that women make up roughly half of the UK workforce.

Memory tip: Men and women have equal rights in the UK; women are about half the workforce.
