Study note
English is spoken throughout the UK, but it is not the only language used, and there are many regional accents and dialects. Several other languages are spoken in different parts of the country and are an important part of local identity and culture.
In Wales, many people speak Welsh, which is taught in schools and universities and is widely seen on signs and used in daily life. In parts of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, people speak Gaelic, and in Northern Ireland some people speak Irish Gaelic.
