The geography of the UK
Study note
The UK lies in the north-west of Europe and is made up of the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland, and many smaller islands. Because it is an island nation, the sea has always been important to its history and trade.
The longest distance across the British mainland runs from John O'Groats, on the north coast of Scotland, to Land's End, in the south-west of England. This journey is around 870 miles, or roughly 1,400 kilometres. The fact to remember is that the longest mainland distance is between John O'Groats in the north and Land's End in the south-west.
Memory tip: Longest mainland trip: John O'Groats (north) to Land's End (south-west).
