Famous British novelists

Study note

Britain has produced many famous novelists across the centuries. Jane Austen, who wrote in the early 19th century, is best known for Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, novels about society and family life. J R R Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings, a fantasy story that has been voted Britain's best-loved novel.

In more recent times, J K Rowling created the hugely popular Harry Potter series of children's novels, which has been read all over the world. So you can match Jane Austen with Pride and Prejudice, Tolkien with The Lord of the Rings, and J K Rowling with Harry Potter. Other writers such as Charles Dickens and Agatha Christie are famous too but did not write these particular books.

Memory tip: Austen (Pride and Prejudice), Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), Rowling (Harry Potter).
