Famous British poets
Study note
Poetry has long been an important part of British culture, and each nation has produced famous poets. Robert Burns was a Scottish poet who is sometimes called 'the Bard'. He wrote poems and songs in the Scots language, and he is remembered above all for 'Auld Lang Syne', the song traditionally sung at New Year across the UK and beyond.
Dylan Thomas was a celebrated poet from Wales whose works include the radio play Under Milk Wood. To keep them apart, link Robert Burns with Scotland, the nickname 'the Bard' and 'Auld Lang Syne', and link Dylan Thomas with Wales. Both are seen as national poets of their respective countries.
Memory tip: Robert Burns ('the Bard', Auld Lang Syne) - Scottish; Dylan Thomas - Welsh.
