Theatre and the West End

Study note

The West End of London is the heart of British theatre and is so well known for its many theatres that it is sometimes called 'Theatreland'. Crowds visit the West End to see plays, musicals and other shows throughout the year, and it has a worldwide reputation.

One famous West End production is The Mousetrap, a murder mystery play written by Agatha Christie. It has been performed in the West End for many decades, far longer than any other show of its kind, which makes it the longest-running play of its type. So for this topic remember that the West End is nicknamed Theatreland and that The Mousetrap is the long-running murder mystery linked with it.

Memory tip: London's West End = 'Theatreland'; 'The Mousetrap' has run for decades.
