Henry Purcell

Henry Purcell, who lived from 1659 to 1695, was one of the first great English composers. He held the important post of organist at Westminster Abbey, the famous London church, and he wrote a wide range of music, including church pieces, operas and other works for special occasions.
Purcell is remembered for developing a British musical style that was distinct from that of the rest of Europe, rather than simply copying foreign fashions.
