Scotland and Bannockburn (1314)

Study note

English kings had far less success against Scotland than they did against Wales. The Scots fought hard to keep their independence, and the most famous moment of that struggle came in 1314.

In that year the Scottish, led by Robert the Bruce, met the English army at the Battle of Bannockburn. The result was a great Scottish victory. Robert the Bruce defeated the English, and the battle became a lasting symbol of Scottish freedom.

The outcome mattered for centuries. Thanks to Bannockburn and the resistance it represented, Scotland remained unconquered by the English and kept its independence. For the test, three things go together: the date 1314, the battle Bannockburn, and the leader Robert the Bruce. Be careful not to confuse 1314 with 1066, which is the date of the Battle of Hastings.

Memory tip: 1314 Bannockburn: Robert the Bruce beats the English; Scotland stays free.
