Magna Carta (1215)
Study note
In 1215, King John was forced by his noblemen to agree to Magna Carta (the 'Great Charter'). It limited the power of the monarch and established the idea that even the king had to follow the law. It is seen as an important early step towards rights and the rule of law.
Memory tip: 1215, King John signs Magna Carta, the king is no longer above the law.
