The Norman Conquest and the Battle of Hastings (1066)

In 1066, William, Duke of Normandy in what is now northern France, defeated Harold, the Saxon king of England, at the Battle of Hastings. Harold was killed in the battle and William became king, known as William the Conqueror. This was the last successful foreign invasion of England and brought many changes, with Norman French shaping the English language.
