The Anglo-Saxons and Sutton Hoo

Study note

After the Romans left, Britain was invaded by tribes from northern Europe: the Jutes, the Angles and the Saxons, whose languages are the basis of modern English. By about AD 600, Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were established, mainly in what is now England. One king was buried at Sutton Hoo in modern Suffolk, in a ship filled with treasure and armour and then covered by a mound of earth. Parts of the west, including much of Wales, and Scotland stayed free of Anglo-Saxon rule.

Memory tip: Jutes, Angles, Saxons; kingdoms by AD 600; Sutton Hoo ship burial in Suffolk.
