The Bronze Age

Study note

About 4,000 years ago the people of Britain learned how to make bronze, a metal created by mixing copper and tin. This new skill gives the period its name, the Bronze Age. It followed the Stone Age, and it came before the Iron Age, so the order to remember is Stone, then Bronze, then Iron.

Bronze Age people lived in simple round homes known as roundhouses. When someone died, they were buried in tombs called round barrows, which were mounds raised over the dead. These details about homes and burials often appear in test questions, so it is worth fixing them in your mind.

The people of this age were also highly skilled metalworkers. As well as bronze, they worked with gold, crafting tools for everyday use, weapons for hunting and fighting, and fine ornaments and jewellery. Their craftsmanship shows a society that was becoming more settled and more advanced than the hunter-gatherers who came before them.

Memory tip: Bronze Age: roundhouses, round barrows for burials, fine bronze and gold metalwork.
