The Swinging Sixties
Study note
The 1960s in Britain are often called the 'Swinging Sixties'. This was a time of rapid social change, with a lively youth culture, new fashions and a more relaxed attitude to many aspects of life. Laws on a number of social issues were also changed during this decade.
British pop music led the way and became famous around the world. Two of the most successful bands of the time were The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, both of which rose to fame in the 1960s. These were the bands of the era, not groups such as the Suffragettes or the Jacobites, which are not bands at all but belong to earlier history. So remember the Swinging Sixties for social change and for British bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
Memory tip: Swinging Sixties: social change + The Beatles and The Rolling Stones lead British pop.
