Post-war immigration to the UK

Study note

After the Second World War, Britain faced a huge task in rebuilding the country, and there were not enough workers to do everything that was needed. To help fill the gap, people were invited to come and work in Britain from other parts of the world, especially the Commonwealth.

Many came from the West Indies, as well as from India and Pakistan and, later, places such as Bangladesh. These workers helped to rebuild Britain and to staff important services, and many settled and made lasting contributions to British society. So it is true that, after the Second World War, people were invited from the West Indies and South Asia to help rebuild Britain. This period of immigration helped shape the diverse country that the UK is today.

Memory tip: After WWII, workers were invited from the West Indies, India and Pakistan to rebuild Britain.
