The post-war welfare state and the Beveridge Report
Study note
After the Second World War, the British people wanted change. In 1945 they elected a Labour government led by Clement Attlee, who promised to introduce the welfare state set out in the Beveridge Report of 1942. A national system of benefits gave people social security, often described as protection from the cradle to the grave.
Memory tip: 1945 Attlee's Labour government builds the welfare state from the 1942 Beveridge Report.
