The Blitz
Study note
Even after losing the Battle of Britain, Germany did not give up its air attacks. The German air force began bombing London and other British cities, mostly at night. This sustained night bombing of British cities is known as the Blitz, so remember the Blitz as the German bombing of Britain, not a British raid on Germany.
The Blitz caused huge destruction. The city of Coventry was almost completely destroyed, and great damage was done to other cities too, especially the East End of London. So if asked which city was almost totally destroyed, the answer is Coventry. The courage of people during this time gave rise to the phrase the Blitz spirit, still used to describe Britons pulling together in hard times.
Memory tip: The Blitz = German night bombing of British cities; Coventry was almost destroyed.
