Winston Churchill, the wartime leader

Study note

As France fell in 1940, Winston Churchill became Prime Minister and Britain's war leader. Before becoming a Conservative MP in 1900, he had been a soldier and journalist. He refused to surrender to the Nazis and inspired the British people through famous speeches. He lost the 1945 election but returned as Prime Minister in 1951, and in 2002 he was voted the greatest Briton of all time.

Memory tip: Churchill became wartime PM in 1940; inspirational speeches; PM again in 1951.
