Ireland: division and the Good Friday Agreement
Study note
Tensions over Irish independence grew in the early 20th century, including the Easter Rising of 1916. In 1921 a treaty led to the division of Ireland: the south became independent, while Northern Ireland remained part of the UK. The Good Friday Agreement of 1998 helped bring peace to Northern Ireland.
Memory tip: Easter Rising 1916; Ireland split 1921; Good Friday Agreement 1998 brings peace.
