The Easter Rising and the partition of Ireland

Study note

The early 20th century saw growing demands for Irish independence. In 1916, the Easter Rising took place in Dublin, when Irish nationalists rose up against British rule. Although the rising itself was put down, it became an important moment in the campaign for independence.

A few years later, in 1922, Ireland was divided. The six counties in the north became Northern Ireland and remained part of the United Kingdom, while the rest of Ireland separated and later became an independent republic. So what happened to Ireland in 1922 was partition, with Northern Ireland staying in the UK. This was not a case of Ireland joining the European Union, being conquered by Vikings or becoming a Crown dependency. Remember the Easter Rising of 1916 and the partition of Ireland in 1922.

Memory tip: Easter Rising 1916; Ireland partitioned in 1922, the north stays in the UK.
