The First World War (1914 to 1918)

Study note

The First World War broke out in 1914 after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Britain fought as part of the Allied Powers, which included France, Russia, Belgium, Serbia and later the United States, against the Central Powers, mainly Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. The whole of the British Empire was involved, and the war ended in 1918.

Memory tip: WWI 1914 to 1918; Allies (Britain, France, Russia) vs Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary).
