The First World War (1914-1918)

Study note

The First World War was fought from 1914 to 1918. Britain fought alongside its allies, and huge numbers of people from Britain and across its empire took part. The losses were terrible, with millions killed or wounded. It is important not to confuse these dates with the Second World War, which was fought later, from 1939 to 1945.

The First World War is remembered every year on Remembrance Day, which falls on 11 November. This is the date on which the fighting ended in 1918. People wear poppies and hold a short silence to honour those who died in the war. So the facts to fix in memory are the years 1914 to 1918 for the war, and 11 November as Remembrance Day.

Memory tip: WWI: 1914-1918. Remembrance Day is 11 November.
