The Boer War (1899 to 1902)

Study note

The Boer War was fought from 1899 to 1902 in South Africa. It was a conflict between the British and the Boers, who were settlers originally from the Netherlands. So the two facts to fix are the place, South Africa, and the origin of the Boers, the Netherlands.

The Boers fought fiercely and the war dragged on for more than three years, longer than many had expected. Many people died, both in the fighting itself and from disease. The hardship and cost of the war made people in Britain start to question the future of the Empire and how it should be run, making those debates much more urgent than before.

Memory tip: Boer War 1899 to 1902 in South Africa, against Dutch settlers called the Boers.
