The Great Exhibition of 1851
Study note
In 1851, Britain held a huge event called the Great Exhibition to display its achievements to the world. It took place in a remarkable glass building known as the Crystal Palace, in Hyde Park in London. The exhibition showed off Britain's industry, design and inventions, and attracted visitors from across the country and abroad.
The Great Exhibition was held at the height of the Victorian Age, a time when Britain led the world in producing iron, coal and cotton cloth. It is the Crystal Palace in London, not Edinburgh Castle, the Tower of London or Cardiff, that is linked with the 1851 exhibition. Remember the combination: the year 1851, the Great Exhibition, and the Crystal Palace in London.
