Queen Victoria and the Victorian Age
Study note
Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837 when she was just 18 years old. She went on to reign until 1901, a span of almost 64 years, which made hers one of the longest reigns in British history. The two dates to lock in are 1837 for the start and 1901 for the end, and her age of 18 at the start.
Her long reign is known as the Victorian Age. It was a period of great change and confidence. The middle classes grew larger and more important, and Britain greatly increased its power and influence around the world through its empire. At the same time, reformers worked hard to improve conditions for the poor and for workers. So link Victoria firmly with the years 1837 to 1901.
Memory tip: Victoria reigned 1837 to 1901 (nearly 64 years); her age = the Victorian Age.
