Sake Dean Mahomet
Study note
Sake Dean Mahomet was born in 1759 in the Bengal region of India. Before coming to Britain he served in the Bengal army. He is a good example of the people from across the Empire who settled in Britain and left their mark on everyday life here.
In 1810 he opened the Hindoostane Coffee House in London, which is remembered as the first curry house to open in Britain. So when asked what he was the first to open, the answer is a curry house. Together with his wife, he also introduced shampooing to Britain, which at the time meant the Indian art of head massage. Keep both achievements in mind: the first curry house and the introduction of shampooing.
