Richard Arkwright and the factory system
Study note
Richard Arkwright was an important figure in the Industrial Revolution. He improved the way raw cotton was prepared, carded and spun, making the process much faster and more reliable. More than this, he brought workers and machines together under one roof and ran his factories in an efficient and profitable way.
Because of this, Arkwright is remembered for helping to develop the modern factory system during the Industrial Revolution. He is linked with cotton factories, not with the railway engine, penicillin or the printing press, which are connected to other people. The key fact to remember is that Richard Arkwright was a pioneer of the efficient factory system in the Industrial Revolution.
Memory tip: Arkwright = the efficient cotton-spinning factory pioneer of the Industrial Revolution.
