The Industrial Revolution in Britain

Study note

The Industrial Revolution was the rapid growth of industry in Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries. Britain was the first country to industrialise on a large scale, using machinery and steam power. Coal and raw materials were needed to power the new factories, and many people moved from the countryside to work in mining and manufacturing.

Memory tip: Britain industrialised first: machines and steam power; people move to towns to work in factories.
