The Act of Union of 1707

Study note

The Act of Union was agreed in 1707, and in Scotland it is known as the Treaty of Union. It joined England, which already included Wales, together with Scotland to create a single new country called the Kingdom of Great Britain. From then on the whole of Great Britain was governed by one Parliament, based in London, not by separate parliaments.

Scotland was no longer an independent country, but the union let it keep several important institutions of its own. It kept its own legal system, its own education system and its own Presbyterian Church. So the two things to remember that Scotland retained are its legal system and its Presbyterian Church. What it did not keep was a separate Parliament in Edinburgh, which is why that is the false statement in those questions.

Memory tip: 1707 Act of Union = Kingdom of Great Britain; Scotland keeps its law, schools and church.
