The Glorious Revolution of 1688

Study note

In 1688, leading Protestants in England invited William of Orange, ruler of the Netherlands and husband of Mary, to take the throne because they did not want the Catholic king James II to continue. William landed and faced no real resistance, and James II fled abroad. This change of monarch became known as the Glorious Revolution.

Memory tip: 1688. Protestants invite William of Orange; Catholic James II flees. The 'Glorious Revolution'.
