Isaac Newton

Study note

Sir Isaac Newton was one of the most important scientists in history. He is most famous for explaining the force of gravity, the force that pulls objects towards the Earth. He also described the laws of motion, which explain how objects move. It was gravity, not electricity, magnetism or wind, that he is best known for explaining.

Newton made other major discoveries too. He showed that ordinary white light is actually made up of all the colours of the rainbow. His ideas changed the way people understood the natural world and helped lay the foundations of modern science. The key fact to remember is that Sir Isaac Newton explained the force of gravity and the laws of motion.

Memory tip: Newton = gravity, the laws of motion, and white light split into rainbow colours.
