Cromwell, Scotland and the oak tree escape
Study note
The Scots had not agreed to the execution of Charles I and declared his son Charles II to be king. Charles II was crowned in Scotland and led a Scottish army into England, but Cromwell defeated it at the Battles of Dunbar and Worcester. Charles II escaped after Worcester, famously hiding in an oak tree on one occasion, and fled to Europe. After Cromwell died, his son Richard became Lord Protector but could not control the army or government, and many people began to want a king again.
Memory tip: Charles II beaten at Dunbar and Worcester, hides in an oak tree, flees to Europe.
