English Civil War and Oliver Cromwell

Study note

The English Civil War was fought between supporters of the king (Cavaliers) and supporters of Parliament (Roundheads). King Charles I was defeated and executed in 1649, and for a time England became a republic led by Oliver Cromwell. The monarchy was later restored under Charles II in 1660.

Memory tip: Charles I loses his head in 1649; Cromwell rules; monarchy restored 1660.
