Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada (1588)

Study note

Elizabeth I was a Protestant queen and a daughter of Henry VIII. Her long reign is often seen as a golden age of English culture, with great success in poetry, drama and exploration. She re-established the Church of England and managed to find a balance between different religious groups, which made her very popular.

The most famous event of her reign came in 1588, when the English navy defeated the Spanish Armada. The Armada was a large fleet sent by Catholic Spain to invade England. Its defeat in 1588 was a major victory and a turning point that secured England against invasion. Be careful not to confuse this date with the reign of Queen Victoria, who ruled much later, in the 19th century. Remember the pairing: 1588, Elizabeth I, the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

Memory tip: 1588, Elizabeth I's England defeats the Spanish Armada.
