Tudor monarchs after Henry VIII
Study note
After Henry VIII died, three of his children ruled in turn, and the country's religion changed with each one. First came his young son Edward VI, who was strongly Protestant; during his reign England moved further away from the Roman Catholic Church. Edward VI was the monarch who directly followed Henry VIII, not Elizabeth I, James I or Charles I.
Edward VI died young and was followed by his half-sister Mary I, who was a devout Catholic and tried to restore the Roman Catholic faith in England. After Mary came her half-sister Elizabeth I, who was Protestant and re-established the Church of England. So remember the order: Edward VI the Protestant, then Mary I the Catholic, then Elizabeth I the Protestant.
Memory tip: Order after Henry VIII: Edward VI (Protestant), Mary I (Catholic), Elizabeth I (Protestant).
