Overseas territories not in the UK
Study note
The Crown dependencies are not the only places connected to Britain that lie outside the UK. There are also several British Overseas Territories in other parts of the world. Well known examples include St Helena, a remote island in the Atlantic, and the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic.
Like the Crown dependencies, the British Overseas Territories are linked to the UK but are not a part of it. They are governed in their own way and are not counted among the four nations of the United Kingdom. The difference is that Overseas Territories are usually far away across the world, while Crown dependencies are close to the British coast.
For the test, recognise St Helena and the Falkland Islands as British Overseas Territories. The Isle of Man, by contrast, is a Crown dependency, while Scotland is one of the four countries of the UK, so neither of those is an Overseas Territory.
Memory tip: St Helena and the Falklands are Overseas Territories, linked to the UK but not in it.
