Crown dependencies

Study note

The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man have a special status that is easy to get wrong. They are not part of the United Kingdom, even though they are closely connected to it. Instead they are known as Crown dependencies.

A Crown dependency is a territory that is linked to the Crown but governs itself. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man each have their own government and make many of their own laws, rather than being run from Westminster. This is why they are described as linked to the UK but not a part of it.

For the test, the key point is that the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are Crown dependencies, not countries of the UK. Do not confuse them with Scotland and Wales, which are countries of the UK, or with British Overseas Territories, which are a different category again.

Memory tip: Channel Islands + Isle of Man = linked to the Crown, but NOT in the UK.
