Population and people
Study note
The United Kingdom is home to more than 60 million people. The population has grown steadily over the centuries, and the country is one of the more densely populated in Europe. For the test, the figure to remember is that the UK has a population of more than 60 million.
The people are not spread evenly across the four nations. England has by far the largest share of the population, with most people in the UK living there. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have much smaller populations, with Northern Ireland the smallest of the four.
So if a question asks roughly how many people live in the UK, the answer is more than 60 million, not a few million and not hundreds of millions. And if it asks which nation has the most people, the answer is England.
Memory tip: Over 60 million people; most live in England.
