Britain and the British Isles
Study note
Several similar sounding terms are used to describe the UK and the islands around it, and it helps to know how they differ. The words Britain, British and British Isles are used loosely and tend to refer to everyone in the UK, so they cover a wider group of people than the term Great Britain.
Great Britain, by contrast, is a precise term. It refers only to the three nations of England, Scotland and Wales, which share the largest island. Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland, so it does not mean the same thing as the United Kingdom. Adding Northern Ireland to Great Britain is what makes the UK.
For the test, remember that Britain and British are loose, everyday words for people of the UK, while Great Britain is the exact term for just England, Scotland and Wales. Saying that Great Britain is identical to the United Kingdom is a wrong answer.
Memory tip: Great Britain = three nations only; Britain and British Isles are looser, wider terms.
