B1 English test vs the Life in the UK Test: what is the difference?
4 min read · Last reviewed 4 June 2026
For most ILR and citizenship applications there are two separate language and knowledge requirements: the Life in the UK Test and an English language requirement, often met with a B1 English test. They are different tests, booked separately, and you may need both.
The Life in the UK Test
This is a knowledge test. You answer 24 multiple-choice questions about British values, history, society and government, and you need 18 correct to pass. It is what this website helps you prepare for.
The B1 English test
This checks your English speaking and listening at level B1 on the international scale. It is a different kind of test, usually a Secure English Language Test (SELT) taken at an approved provider, and it focuses on conversation rather than facts.
Do you need both?
- Many people need to meet both the knowledge requirement and the English requirement.
- Some people are exempt from the English requirement, for example nationals of certain majority English-speaking countries, or those with a degree taught in English.
- Age and medical exemptions can also apply, as they do for the Life in the UK Test.
The two tests are separate. Passing one does not cover the other. Check which you need on GOV.UK.
